Worship
Liturgy
St. Thomas’ uses the Book of Common Prayer at the 8 a.m. service on Sundays,
and the Book of Alternative Services at 9 a.m. and 11 a.m. on Sundays, and
on most other occasions. Occasionally there is an “instructed” portion
of the service, an opportunity to refresh our knowledge about the origins and
meaning of some of the things we do. Some services offer opportunities to explore
innovative or experimental ways to experience and respond to God’s presence.
Many parishioners play an active role in the worship experience each week.
Altar Guild
Altar Guild members provide invaluable help “behind the scenes.” They
prepare the altar for all services, including baptisms and weddings, and are
responsible for the preparation and cleaning of Eucharistic vessels and linens
for our worship services. In addition, major festivals are opportunities for
the decoration and special preparation of our sanctuary.
Lay Readers
Lay readers are licensed by the Bishop to assist in worship services. Their
duties may include reading the Gospel, leading the prayers of the people,
preparing the altar for Holy Communion and occasional preaching or leading
of services. They may also lead or preach at services in other churches as
requested, and take communion to shut-ins.
Lay Administrants
Lay Administrants administer the chalice during the Eucharist, and might also
read lessons.
Servers
Servers assist the clergy throughout the service. This ministry is open to
all ages.
Prayers of the People, Prayer
Ministry
Anyone with a heart for prayer may speak to the Rector about becoming involved
in writing and offering the prayers of the people. Lay people are also encouraged
to speak to the Rector about assisting with Prayer Ministry at the altar rail
after certain services.
Music – Choir
The choir is a group of singers who lead the 11 a.m. services using traditional
(Renaissance to present) as well as contemporary music. They enjoy collaborating
with other choirs, Tapestry and guest musicians to “make joyful music
unto the Lord.” Choir leader in 2006-07 is Kim Denis, a Masters music
student at the University of Alberta with leadership and musical skills in
voice, piano and organ. All with a love of music are invited to join – no
singing experience required. Extra voices are always welcome at Christmas
and Easter for any who would like to “try it out.” The choir
rehearses on Thursdays at 7:30 p.m.
Music – Tapestry worship
group
Tapestry is a group of instrumentalists and vocalists providing music and worship
leadership at the 9 a.m. service as well as other evening and special services
throughout the year. The group performs a variety of music from Gospel to Taize
as well as contemporary praise songs. A wide variety of instruments and voices
has been incorporated at different times over the years, and Tapestry continues
to welcome inquires from any who would like to add their talents. A commitment
to Tapestry membership includes regular outreach and fellowship events at St.
Thomas’ and throughout the Diocese –and beyond. Rehearsals are
Mondays at 7 p.m.
Drama
This group contributes on occasion to the Sunday 9 a.m. and other services.
Practice is on Saturday mornings as required, and is an opportunity to stretch
the imagination, step out of the ordinary and have a lot of fun and laughs.
For St. Thomas’ drama is a unique and creative way of giving expression
to God’s Spirit.
Liturgical Dance
St. Thomas’ has a small group of talented dancers who occasionally heighten
our understanding and appreciation of the Gospel with a package of music and
interpretive dance that can be extremely moving and powerful.
